The number of cars increases in the central area

The number of cars in the central area has increased from 3691 to 4190 from 2017-2023. Relatively, the increase is greatest in Norðurþing or 14.6%, 8.7% in Tjörneshreppur and if the figures of the "old" Þingeyjarsveit and Skútustaðahrepp are taken together and compared with the data of a new municipality Þingeyjarsveit that covers the same area, the relative increase of cars there is 12.2%.

Gaumur especially monitors energy sources, consumption values and emission values and the average age of the cars is calculated.

Energy sources for cars are changing, as a lower percentage of cars in central areas use gasoline, a higher percentage use diesel, and then the percentage of plug-in hybrid cars and electric cars is increasing. A total of 44.8% of vehicles in the Central Region use gasoline as an energy source, 49.9% use diesel, 1.9% electricity and 3.41% are plug-in hybrids that use either gasoline or diesel along with electricity. Compared to the rest of Iceland, there is a lower percentage of vehicles that use electricity as an energy source or are plug-in hybrid vehicles. There is also a significant difference between the country as a whole and the central area in terms of the proportion of petrol and diesel vehicles. 50.2% of cars in the whole country use petrol and 33.5% of cars in the whole country use diesel.

The consumption value of cars in the Central area has been decreasing during Gaum's monitoring period. At the start of the monitoring period, it was 8.92 l/km, but is now 7.52 l/km. The consumption value of cars is the highest in Tjörnes and the lowest in Norðurþing.

The emission value of vehicles in the Central Region has also been decreasing during the monitoring period. It averaged 204.75 g/km in 2017 and is 188.6 g/km.

When the average age of vehicles is examined, it increased between 2017 and 2022. The biggest increase was between the years 2021 and 2022, from 20.8 years to 23.3 years. The average age of vehicles is the highest in Tjörneshreppi at 24 years and was 26 years at its peak. The average age is the lowest in Norðurþing 16, years and was 19 years in 2022. It is interesting that during the COVID-19, the average age of vehicles rose faster than other years during Gaum's monitoring period, but drops sharply after the end of the pandemic.

Indicator 2.7 contains additional data and information about the vehicle fleet.
